Key points:The awards are being held in Melbourne, Canberra and PerthThis year’s house design competition will be the first for a non-Korean houseDesigner Anna Yoo, who is from Korea, said the awards were important to highlight the diversity of styles and design themes from around the world.
“For me, it’s really important to be able to showcase that there’s a lot of different styles and designs that are still being produced and are being appreciated around the globe,” Ms Yoo said.
The 2017 award for best house design went to a home by Japanese designer Masanori Matsuda, who designed a house in the style of an Asian village in Japan.
Mr Matsuda said the inspiration for the house came from his family’s history in the area.
“The first thing I wanted to do was get rid of the furniture and make the room as minimal as possible.
I was inspired by my grandfather’s family,” he said.”
It was so easy to create a room that looked like it was a village.”
The awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens on June 27.
The 2019 award for house design will be announced at a later date.
